SIMPLE PAST TENSE (RECOUNT TEXT)

1. Pengertian

Simple past tense merupakan jenis kalimat yang digunakan untuk menceritakan kejadian yang terjadi di masa lampau yang mana telah selesai atau berakhir di masa lampau itu juga. Jadi kita akan menggunakan tenses ini ketika kita menceritakan aktivitas kita yang sudah selesai terjadi di masa lalu.

Definisi dalam bahasa Inggris, simple past tense verbs—also called past simple or preterite—show action that occurred and was completed at a particular time in the past.

2. Ciri-Ciri Simple Past Tense

1. Simple past tense atau past simple selalu menggunakan verb 2 dari kata kerja regular (regular verb) atau kata kerja irregular (irregular verb) guna menandakan bahwa aktivitas terjadi di masa lampau.

2. Terdapat penggunaan “was” untuk singular pronoun yaitu I, he, she, it dan “were” untuk plural pronoun berupa we, you, they sebagai to be past tense.

3. Memiliki keterangan waktu yang menjelaskan masa lampau seperti last night, yesterday, two weeks ago, three days ago, dan last month.

3. Formula atau Rumus

1. Nominal Sentence

(+) Subject + to be (was/were) + complement

Examples:

• I was a teacher. (Aku dulu seorang guru.)

• We were a doctor. (Kita dulu adalah seorang dokter.)

(-)  Subject +to be (was/were) + not + complement

Examples:

• I was not fat. (Aku dulu tidak gemuk.)

• They were not a bad kid. (Mereka dulu bukan anak yang nakal.)

 

(?) To be (was/were) + Subject + complement

Examples:

• Was she so busy? (Apakah dulu dia sangat sibuk?)

• Were they happy to work here? (Apakah dulu mereka senang bekerja di sini?)

2. Verbal Sentence

(+) Subject + verb 2 + complement

Example:

• (+) The nurse went to the hospital yesterday. (Suster itu pergi ke rumah sakit kemarin.)

(-) Subject + did + not + verb 1

Example:

• (-) The nurse didn’t go to the hospital yesterday. (Suster itu tidak pergi ke rumah sakit kemarin.)

(?) Did + subject + verb 1

Example:

• (?) Did the nurse go to the hospital yesterday? (Apakah suster itu pergi ke rumah sakit kemarin?)

Saat menggunakan rumus simple past tense untuk bentuk kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya, maka kata kerja akan kembali ke dasar, karena di sana sudah ada bentuk simple past tense do dan does yang  berubah menjadi  did atau did not (didn’t).
